Nestled at an elevation of about 5,400 feet (1,650 meters) above sea level, Hakgala Botanical Garden is one of Sri Lanka’s most enchanting highland gardens and the second largest botanical garden on the island. Established in 1861 by the British under Dr. G.H.K. Thwaites, the garden was originally dedicated to experimental cultivation of cinchona (a plant used to produce quinine for malaria treatment). Later, it was converted into a full-fledged botanical garden, specializing in temperate-climate plants brought from around the world.
Today, Hakgala spreads over nearly 28 hectares, framed by the majestic Hakgala Rock that rises dramatically in the background. The garden enjoys a cool, refreshing climate, with temperatures rarely exceeding 20°C, making it an ideal haven for both native and exotic plant life.
The garden is famous for its stunning rose collection, vibrant orchids, and beautifully landscaped sections such as the Japanese Garden, Fernery, Rock Garden, and Arboretum. Visitors are greeted with seasonal bursts of color throughout the year, from beds of delicate annuals to towering cypress avenues. Hakgala is also rich in legends; according to the Ramayana, it is believed that this was once part of the Ashok Vatika where Sita was kept captive by King Ravana.
Beyond its horticultural treasures, Hakgala is a place of tranquility and beauty, offering panoramic views of the surrounding tea plantations and misty mountains. It remains one of the highlands’ most treasured attractions, combining natural splendor, colonial history, and cultural significance into an unforgettable experience.
