    The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian Ocean situated 50kms off the Southern tip of India and 880 kms north of the Equator. Sri Lanka packs an extraordinary variety of natural and manmade attractions within its modest physical dimensions, and few islands of comparable size can boast a natural environment of such beauty and diversity.
A mere 435 km North – South from Point Pedro to Dondra Head and 225 km across its widest, its contain within its compact 65610 sq. km (25332 sq. miles) an unparalleled diversity of scenic sights, sounds and scents; colorful ceremonies and quaint customs, culture and crafts; monolithic ruins and titanic monuments of a civilizations both ancient and advanced; a multitude of climes and ecosystems from tropical rainforests to subalpine evergreen, rich farm lands to arid scrub jungle; extravagant fauna and flora, wonderful wilderness and wildlife; plus over 1125 km of pristine palm-fringed shoreline where one can swim, surf, snorkel, sail simply soak up the sun …  all within a short 6 hour drive at most, one from another. The country has long been known as a great holiday destination. With the culture, history and outstanding places to go sightseeing, Sri Lanka is the perfect destination for a holiday. The South Asian island nation was known as Ceylon until 1972. Sri Jayewardenepura or Kotte is the administrative capital of Sri Lanka. It is located beyond the eastern suburbs of the commercial capital Colombo. Sri Lanka is the 53rd most populated nation in the world, with an annual population growth rate of 0.79% and a literacy rate of 92%,
Colombo is the largest city and former capital of Sri Lanka.
Most popular sport in the country is cricket.
Sri Lanka is divided into 9 provinces and 25 districts. Each province is administered by a directly elected provincial council.
Sri Lanka enjoys a tropical climate without extremes of temperature; which averages 80°F (27°C) in Colombo and its suburbs, rising to as much as 100° F (38° C) in the semi-arid northwest and cooling off to 61°F (16°C) at higher elevations of the central hill country.
The South-West monsoon which mainly affects the southern, western and central regions during May–July, while the northeast monsoon brings rain to the north and east from November to January.
Sri Lanka’s population is 20.2 million. Sinhalese 74%, Tamils 18% Malays and Moors 7% Burghers and others 1%.
Major religion is Buddhism. Buddhists 69% Hindus 15% Christians 8% and Islam 8%.
Major exports are garments, gems stones, tea, rubber, coconut and textiles.

Currency: SL Rupee bank notes are in denomination of 10,20,50,100,500,1000,2000 and 5000.
