RAVANA WATERFALL - ELLA - SRI LANKA

RAVANA WATERFALL - ELLA - SRI LANKA

Ravana Falls

Nestled among the lush mountains just outside Ella, Ravana Falls is one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful, widest, and most visited waterfalls. Cascading approximately 25 metres (82 feet) over a striking oval-shaped rock formation, the waterfall is surrounded by dense forests, tea plantations, and breathtaking mountain scenery, creating a refreshing natural retreat in the heart of Sri Lanka's hill country.

Located along the scenic Bandarawela–Wellawaya Road, Ravana Falls is easily accessible and has become one of the island's most popular sightseeing attractions. The waterfall forms part of the Ravana Ella Wildlife Sanctuary, approximately 2 km from Ella Railway Station, making it a favourite stop for travellers exploring the picturesque hill country.

According to local tradition, the waterfall visible from the roadside is technically known as Bambaragala Falls, while another smaller waterfall hidden higher up the mountain is considered the original Ravana Falls. However, today the magnificent roadside cascade is universally recognised and visited as Ravana Falls.

The falls are closely linked to the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana, giving this natural wonder great cultural and historical significance. Legend tells that King Ravana, the legendary ruler of Lanka, abducted Princess Sita and concealed her in the nearby Ravana Cave, hidden deep within the surrounding forests. It is also believed that Sita bathed in the natural pools formed by the cascading waters. The nearby Ravana Cave, situated approximately 1,370 metres above sea level, remains one of the region's most fascinating historical and archaeological attractions, drawing visitors interested in both mythology and history.

During the rainy season, Ravana Falls transforms into a spectacular, powerful cascade, with water spreading across the broad rock face in a formation often compared to the petals of a blooming areca flower. In the drier months, the flow becomes gentler, creating crystal-clear pools and a peaceful atmosphere where visitors can relax, enjoy the cool mountain climate, and admire the surrounding natural beauty.

The journey to Ravana Falls is equally rewarding, passing through rolling tea plantations, mist-covered mountains, forests, and charming villages that showcase the beauty of Sri Lanka's hill country. The spectacular scenery, fascinating legends, and easy accessibility make Ravana Falls one of the most photographed and visited natural attractions in the region.

Whether you're stopping to capture stunning photographs, enjoy the refreshing mountain air, explore the legendary Ravana Cave, or simply admire one of Sri Lanka's most picturesque waterfalls, Ravana Falls offers an unforgettable experience where nature, history, and mythology come together in perfect harmony.

"We are an older couple celebrating a lot of years of marriage (and hiking) in Sri Lanka in February this year, for two weeks, and three days in the Maldives. Although we love to drive, we chose to go with a driver-guide, after planning the trip completely independently. (It turned out he might help us in the planning and selection of hotels, we own). The main advantage is reaching the sites, some of which are tired, refreshed after someone else used to bad roads, with bad signage - If you are i..." Sam
