Heritance Kandalama Hotel - Dambulla

Heritance Kandalama Hotel - Dambulla

Conceptualised by Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka’s world renowned architect, Heritance Kandalama, located in a serene area of the mountainside overlooking the Kandalama Lake and the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, provides guests an ambience of luxury and sophistication. Heritance Kandalama, set amidst the all green tropical landscape and providing a host of luxurious facilities, guests always prefer to wander back to this dreamy location. From timber paneled rooms to an infinity pool and restaurants to relish local and international cuisine as well as luxurious spa treatments, the service quality of the hotel will always make you feel relaxed.

The Kandalama Hotel, described by one as a giant belvedere, is not a building to look at, but a building to look from.

Built in a minimalist and contemporary style, the hotel sits on a rocky outcrop on the edge of an ancient reservoir and enjoys sweeping views of the surrounding countryside including two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the 1st Century BC Dambulla rock temple and the 5th Century AD Sigiriya Rock Temple. The hotel itself is surrounded by beautiful naturally landscaped gardens and is a haven for over 160 species of migratory birds.

The hotel is a good base from which to explore Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle. Sigiriya Rock, visible in the distance from the hotel, is a short 30 minute drive. Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and the Minneriya wildlife sanctuary are approximately one and a half hours drive to the north. A combined visit to Minneriya and Polonnaruwa make for a great day out. Anuradhapura deserves an entire day on its own.

The Heritance Kandalama has 152 rooms divided into 6 categories. There are two wings at the hotel – the Sigiriya Wing and the Dambulla Wing. The Sigiriya Wing rooms have views over the lake and towards Sigiriya Rock in the distance. The Dambulla Wing Rooms have views across the paddy fields towards Dambulla.

Royal Suite

Located on the 5th floor of the Sigiriya wing, the Royal Suite is truly fit for royalty

FOR KIDS

A wonderful place to stay with children as there are inter-connecting deluxe and suite rooms. There is no shortage of activities with three swimming pools, horse-riding, and nature trails. Children will particularly enjoy taking a safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla national park to see elephants, peacocks, water buffaloes, and eagles.

CUSINE

The Kandalama has 3 restaurants: Kanchana, Kasyapa and Kaludiya. Food at the Kandalama is often praised – the buffet offers quite a spread with a good mix of western and eastern dishes and is ranked by some as the best buffet in Sri Lanka.

The restaurants offer stunning views over the lake towards Sigiriya Rock. For those looking for an intimate setting for dinner, request a private table to be set on the terrace adjoining the fine dining restaurant.

This hotel is a subsidiary of Aitken Spence Hotels, encompasses a brand proposition of having a collection of resorts which are architecturally unique and blend with its natural environment. The Heritance Hotel chain boasts of Heritance Kandalama, Sri Lanka’s most awarded hotel and “An Icon of Modern Hotel Design” as rated by the Observer UK;

    "We are an older couple celebrating a lot of years of marriage (and hiking) in Sri Lanka in February this year, for two weeks, and three days in the Maldives. Although we love to drive, we chose to go with a driver-guide, after planning the trip completely independently. (It turned out he might help us in the planning and selection of hotels, we own). The main advantage is reaching the sites, some of which are tired, refreshed after someone else used to bad roads, with bad signage - If you are i..." Sam
