Uda Walawe National Park lies within the Moneragala and the Rathnapura Districts and can be accessed from the Rathnapura - Ella road. Approx. 170km from Colombo and covering an area of 30,821 hectares this park lies in the Dry Zone. The parks vegetation is mostly grassland and many valuable trees primarily teak. The park is home to a large number of elephants and other animals one might find here the Grey Langur, Sambar and spotted deer, wild boars, Crocodiles, water buffaloes(Bubalus bubalis)are re-establishing themselves. Other mammals include: toque macaque (Maccaca sinica) endemic, common Langur (Presbytis entellus), jackal (Canis aureus), toddy cat (Paradoxurus hermaphroditis), leopard ( Panthera pardus)and black- napped hare (Lepus nigricollis) and small Indian civet cat (Viverricula indica), endemic golden palm civet cat ( Paradoxurus zeylonensis) , three species of mongoose (Herpestes fuscus), an endemic shrew (Suncus sp.), gerbil (Tatera sp.), rat (Rattus kandianus , soft- furred rat (Millardia meltada), Indian bush rat (Golunda elliotti), mouse (Mus cervicolor) and the endemic (Mus fernandoni)
Bird life includes Sri Lanka Jungle Fowl, Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Wooly-necked Stork, Black-headed Ibis, Black-shouldered Kite, White-bellied Sea Eagle, Crested Serpent Eagle, Changeable Hawk Eagle, Sri Lanka Malkoha, Blue-faced Malkoha, Indian cormorant, Sri Lanka spur fowl, Sri Lanka Jungle fowl, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Grey Hornbill, Brown capped babbler.
Day safaris are possible at Uda Walawe and there is a lovely place for a break by the river. In the middle of the park you would find the Uda Walawe Reservoir. As is the case at Yala this park too closes at 6.30pm giving the visitor a chance to catch a glimpse of nocturnal activity in the park.
